1982 should have been Didier Pironi's but having qualified on Pole Position for the German GP at Hockenheim, he crashed in practice and missed the last 5 races of the season. The final race decided the Drivers' Championship between Keke Rosberg on 42 points and John Watson who had scored 33; although Watson finished ahead of Rosberg he had to be content with equal second in the championship, with Pironi.
The Constructors' Championship was equally tight with Patrick Tambay, Gilles Villeneuve and Mario Andretti all scoring points to add to Pironi's to help Ferrari with the 126C2 to the title. McLaren came a close second with the MP4 & MP4Bs of Watson and Niki Lauda and the Renault RE30Bs of Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux were third. The Renaults had led for almost half the laps during the season but suffered from reliability problems.
Ross Wardles artwork depicts Keke Rosberg's Williams-Cosworth 08 leading the Swiss GP at Dijon-Prenois (in France), followed Alain Prost's Renault RE30B and Niki Lauda driving a McLaren-Cosworth MP4B.
The first special covers are signed by BRIAN HENTON who raced 3 seasons of Formula Vee / Super Vee (1970-72); then moved to F3 for 1973, with his Group Racing Developments (GRD) car. He then joined the March F3 Team for 1974, winning 18 races en route to the Lombard and Forward Trust Championship titles. He won the Grovewood Motor Racing Award in 1975, the year he upgraded to F2 and raced for Lotus in the British and US GPs. In 1976 he concentrated on business interests whilst waiting for a drive, returning to F1 for 1977, driving a March in the US GP and an Ensign for the Dutch GP. 1978 was another quiet year but 1979 saw him acheive F2 wins with Toleman at Mugello and Misano, coming runner-up in the championship.
In 1980 he succeeded in becoming the European F2 Champion and was rewarded by Toleman with an F1 drive in the 1981 Italian GP, finishing a creditable tenth. For 1982, his fullest season of F1, he raced once for Arrows and 11 races for Tyrrell, achieving reasonable placings in 7 races, including a fastest lap at Silverstone. His last F1 appearance was in a non-championship race at Brands Hatch; he finished in fourth place.
