Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 003 retired early in the Italian GP but had already won his second Drivers' Championship. The race produced an exceptionally close finish with 5 cars crossing the line within 0.6 seconds. Peter Gethin, BRM P160 (No 18) won the race, followed by Ronnie Peterson, March 711 (No 25), Francois Cevert, Tyrrell 002 (No 2), Mike Hailwood, Surteees TS9 (No 9) and Howden Ganley, BRM P160 (No 19).
