Emerson Fittipaldi with 3 wins in the McLaren M23 and Clay Regazonni having won a race in the Ferrari 312B3, entered the final race of the season at Watkins Glen, tied on 52 points. Regazzoni finished 4 laps down whilst Fittipaldi came fourth and took the drivers' title by 3 points. Assisted by Denny Hulme, Fittipaldi took the Constructors' Championship for McLaren.

Niki Lauda led for most laps during the season but did not score in the last 5 races due to accidents and technical hitches; he came fourth in the drivers' table and Ferrari was runner-up constructor.
